Don Long, a self-taught mechanical engineer, began Long Machine Company in a rental building as a one man welding and fabricating shop in 1984. Specializing in one of a kind projects and prototypes. By 1985 land was purchased and a 2000 square foot building was erected. By 2003 an additional 3000 square feet was added.

In 1989 a friend in the Concrete Burial Vault business was in need of a machine to better handle his vaults. Together the two looked at machines already on the market, seeing several things each unit needed. Don designed a better more user-friendly machine.

Through word of mouth promotion the business began to grow, selling to other vault dealers. As the business was expanding in 1998 Don's son, Bryan, a mechanical engineer and welder, became a partner.
